The Department of Residential Life's mission is to assist in the preparation of citizen-leaders by fostering community, providing access, focusing on resident needs and supporting the educational experience. Fort Hays State University has six halls and two apartment complexes housing up to approximately 1,700 residents.

Position Summary
The Assistant Director of Residential Life is responsible for supporting the vision of the department while providing leadership to staff and students.  Under the leadership of the Director of Residential Life, the Assistant Director is responsible for direct supervision of four Community Directors, and indirect supervision of four graduate assistants. This position serves as the advisor for the Residence Hall Association (RHA).

Responsibilities
  • Work in conjunction with the director of Residential Life to develop and implement a comprehensive on campus living program focused on student success.
  • Directly supervise four full-time professional community directors and support the supervision of four graduate assistants.
  • Assist in the training and evaluation of professional community directors and graduate assistants, and support the training of community assistants and front desk student staff members.
  • Evaluate student staff programming model and look for opportunities for resident engagement.
  • Advise the Residence Hall Association.
  • Work with campus partners to build relationships with-in the department.
  • Work apart of our care teams and advocate for our students.
  • Investigate and respond to concerns of students, parents, and university staff members in a manner that provides care and accurate information while fostering positive relationships.
  • Execute all administrative and customer service elements of summer camps and conferences, including scheduling, placements, check-ins, billings, and collections of summer revenue for summer conferences.
  • Work collaboratively with facilities and housekeeping partner to ensure successful building turnovers throughout summer.
  • Continually seek new opportunities to increase summer revenue through marketing and recruitment of new summer conference clients.
  • Partners with the other assistant director to develop and oversee departmental committees.
  • Provide comprehensive training to full-time, graduate, and student staff in the areas of crisis and risk management to ensure the security and safety of students.
  • Participate in Residential Life sponsored programs, university visit days, senior recognition programs, and special weekends. Represent the Residential Life Office on division and university committees, and establish collaborative relationships with other university offices.
  • Encourage and promote a safe on campus community that values inclusion and diversity.
  • Oversee departmental conduct management through the use of Maxient.
  • Participate in on-call rotation. Provide crisis and emergency response for all housing areas.
  • Work with outside venders such as Res Life Cinema, Swank Care Packages, and OCM.
  • Have a basic understanding of the Clery Act and Title IX federal requirements in relation to student conduct and campus safety.
  • Assume the role of director or assistant director in their absence and assist with various projects, communications and reports, and attend various meetings on their behalf.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant or related field. 
  • 2 years relevant full-time professional experience.   At least 1 year of supervision experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in student affairs, higher education, or related field.
  • Experience with crisis management.
  • General understanding of residential life processes and procedures.
  • Ability to handle multiple work priorities, organize and plan projects effectively.
  • Successful experience in building collaborative partnerships.
  • Demonstrated experience in exercising good judgment.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to build and manage teams effectively.
  • Knowledge of StarRez and Maxient programs.

This is a 12-month position responsible for working on the residential life team to deliver a vibrant residential living community that engages students for success at Fort Hays State University. Versatility and collaboration are the keys to this position.
