This is a full-time, limited residency, nine-month tenure track position (with summer teaching available) in the Department of Advanced Education Programs in the College of Education at Fort Hays State University.  The primary responsibility of the position is instruction in counselor education in the CACREP-accredited School Counseling and Clinical Mental Health Counseling programs, with the expectation that the faculty member will also engage in scholarly activity and university/professional service.  The areas of responsibility are typically in a proportion of 60% instruction, 20% scholarship, and 20% service.  Responsibilities will also include advising, clinical supervision of practicum and internship students, and assisting with accreditation.

Successful candidates should be well-rounded, with diverse institutional, educational, research, and experiential backgrounds; leadership and/or teaching in a higher education setting; and a record of scholarly activity and service to the larger community.  Successful candidates should also have experience as a school counselor and/or experience as a counselor in mental health or community settings. Candidates should be eligible for LPC/LCPC or an equivalent license in the state of Kansas. LPC/LCPC is preferred.

Minimum Qualifications: An earned doctoral degree in counselor education and supervision, or emphasis in that area, preferably from a CACREP-accredited program.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Practical/relevant experience as a school counselor and/or a counselor in mental health or a community setting.
  • Successful candidates should be well-rounded, with diverse institutional, educational, research, and experiential backgrounds.
  • Instructional experience in a college or university.
  • Experience in the application of educational technology in distance education and traditional learning environments.
  • Demonstrated experience of mentoring and supervising graduate students.
  • Demonstrated record of scholarly activity and service to the larger community.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional service activities.

Responsibilities:
  • Instruction - The candidate filling this position will be expected to teach the equivalent of 12 credit hours per semester at the graduate level within the Counseling Program.  Instructional responsibility will primarily focus on distance learning, both synchronous and asynchronous, with possible brief intensive on-campus learning experiences.  The candidate may also be expected to provide clinical supervision for student practicum and internship experiences.
  • Student Advisement - Student advisement at the graduate level is a part of the instructional responsibility of this position.  Student advisement includes career counseling plus class schedules and degree summaries.
  • Scholarship - A commitment to scholarship is required and may include book/journal publications, writing grant proposals, the development of innovative educational programs, and conference presentations.
  • Service - A commitment to service activities is required and may include national, regional, state, or local professional involvement and other services activities at the department, college, university, and community levels.

About the Department:
The Advanced Education Programs Department is housed in the College of Education at Fort Hays State University.  This department offers twenty-eight master’s and Education Specialist programs for candidates pursuing advanced endorsements or degrees in educational or community settings.  Most programs are offered fully online with the exception of some courses in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, School Counseling, and Higher Education Student Affairs.  Our programs are accredited through the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), and the two Counseling Programs accredited through the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).

About the College:
The College of Education at Fort Hays State University houses two departments.  The Teacher Education Department focuses on supporting candidates in pursuing initial teaching licensure and the Advanced Education Programs Department supports candidates in pursuing advanced endorsements and degrees in educational or community settings.
