GENERAL FUNCTION:
To ensure electric service reliability through the construction, inspection, test, repair and maintenance of electrical equipment in substations. Install, connect and test electrical substation equipment including circuit breakers, transformers, regulators and other substation equipment operating at voltages of 4kV to 230kV. Inspect and test equipment and circuits to identify malfunctions or defects using wiring diagrams and testing devices such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, or ammeters. Consult manuals, schematics, wiring diagrams, and engineering personnel in order to troubleshoot and solve equipment problems and to determine correct equipment functionality.

EDUCATION:
Associates degree in industrial electrical, instrument and control, or electronics field or completion of 2-year electrical technology program from a technical school is required. A combination of work experience and education may substitute for the education requirement.

EXPERIENCE:
A minimum of one to two years of experience involving both on the job experience and informal training related to the installation and/or maintenance of industrial or high voltage utility equipment. 

JOB KNOWLEDGE:
Must possess knowledge of the operational aspects of an electrical transmission or distribution system or industrial power systems.  Must be able to acquire specific knowledge about every aspect of a substation within a reasonable time span.  Must possess mechanical knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance. Knowledge of common designs, tools, and principals involved in the operational aspects of an electrical substation is helpful.  Must be willing to gain knowledge of the electric transmission and distribution system to ensure system work orders and switching can be done in a safe manner.

ABILITIES AND SKILLS:
Must have the ability to perform routine maintenance on equipment and determine when and what kind of maintenance is needed. Must use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems. Must possess a working knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry and their applications to electric power computations including the application of Ohms law. Able to read and understand schematic and wiring diagrams and substation construction drawings. Must be proficient in the use of personal computers and associated programs at the level required to successfully perform the essential responsibilities of the position. Must possess working knowledge of MS-Word and MS-Excel and have demonstrated ability to utilize microprocessor-based devices to communicate with and maintain equipment. Ability to handle a variety of diverse tasks and organize work to meet deadlines.  Must possess excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.  Must pay close attention to details.  Will be required to complete the Midwest Energy Substation Program. A valid Kansas Driver’s License is required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Major portion of work day involves work in substations. Subject to call 24 hours per day, including weekends and holidays.  Subject to long periods of work. Work involves outside work in all types of weather.
