Collects and prepares specimens for analysis through various procedures including blood draw, finger sticks and swabbing.
Position Summary
Collects blood and various non-blood specimens such as urine, sputum and throat or nasal swabs for laboratory testing with a turnaround time of 30 minutes for stats and two hours for routines while maintaining specimen integrity.
Initials, dates, and times all collections.
Identifies, labels, handles and transports specimens to the lab for testing.
Coordinates the collection of therapeutic drug-monitoring assays with nursing personnel to ensure the proper drug dose to collection time.
Utilizes bar code scanning and verbal communication for patient identifiers.
Completes order entry through the electronic medical record/database.
Qualifications
Required:
High school graduate or equivalent.
BLS certification required or must complete BLS certification with in the first two weeks of employment.
Ability to manage stress through effective communication and multitasking.
Ability to deal understandingly and tactfully with ill patients and their families.
Ability to maintain working relationships with Associates.
As of October 1, 2017: Education documentation required for CLIA purposes.
Preferred:
Phlebotomy technician certification (PBT) through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or other regulatory agency equivalent to the ASCP
Preferred courses in medical terminology.
Preferred six months of medical center experience.
