POSITION SUMMARY
Under the guidance of the Biomed Manager, the Biomed Equipment Technician (BMET) is responsible for the installation, maintenance, calibration, and repair of a wide range of medical devices and equipment within the hospital and clinical settings. This role ensures that all biomedical equipment is functioning safely, accurately, and in compliance with regulatory standards, contributing to high-quality patient care. The technician works closely with medical staff, providing technical support and training as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
  • Completion of an accredited biomedical program or prior biomedical equipment experience is required. 
  • Associate degree or equivalent two-year vocational training in Biomedical Equipment Technology, Electronics, or a related field is preferred.
  • Military training is preferred.
Certifications/Licensures:
  • Valid Kansas driver’s license with an acceptable driving record, insurable through the hospital’s insurance carrier, is required.
  • Additional certification may be required for certain settings or populations; Specific information and the timeframe in which such certification must be attained will be provided by the department manager at the time of hire/transfer into the department.
Work Experience/Skills:
  • Basic understanding and skills related to general biomedical systems and devices is required.
  • Basic knowledge of mathematics, anatomy, physiology, biology, physics, chemistry, medical terminology, English, computer and networking peripherals, and professional skills is required.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics is preferred.
  • Basic understanding of clinical equipment and radiological, laboratory, and network medical systems is preferred.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Equipment Maintenance & Repair:
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance and inspections on biomedical equipment to ensure proper functioning.
  • Diagnose and repair malfunctioning medical devices, including but not limited to monitors, defibrillators, infusion pumps, ventilators, and imaging equipment.
  • Ensure that all equipment repairs meet manufacturer specifications and hospital safety standards.
Installation & Calibration:
  • Install and set up new medical equipment, ensuring proper integration into hospital systems.
  • Calibrate equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability, following manufacturer guidelines.
  • Maintain detailed records of all installations, calibrations, and repairs.
Technical Support:
  • Provide on-site technical support to healthcare professionals regarding the use and operation of biomedical equipment.
  • Troubleshoot issues promptly to minimize downtime and ensure continuous operation of critical devices.
Compliance & Documentation:
  • Ensure that all biomedical equipment complies with applicable safety standards and regulatory requirements, including those from the FDA and The Joint Commission.
  • Accurately document all maintenance, repairs, and inspections through the effective use of the Medical Equipment Management System.
  • Assist in preparing for and participating in regulatory audits and inspections.
Training & Education:
  • Conduct training sessions for healthcare staff on the safe and effective use of medical equipment.
  • Stay updated on new technologies and best practices in biomedical equipment maintenance and repair.
Safety & Quality Assurance:
  • Participate in the hospital’s safety programs, ensuring that all biomedical equipment is used in a manner that protects patients and staff.
  • Identify and report potential hazards or issues with equipment to the manager.
Outreach/Travel:
  • Ensure safe driving techniques when operating department vehicles under adverse weather conditions.
  • Strategically maneuver vehicles through heavy traffic, difficult loading dock entries, and other obstacles.
  • Load and unload vehicles, complete daily vehicle maintenance, and address minor maintenance issues.
Other Duties:
  • Perform other duties, as assigned.

  • Patient Demographic Information (information used to identify a person): Name, Date of Birth, Address, Race, Marital Status, Religion
  • Clinical Information (information that describes a patient’s health status): Diagnosis, Reports/Medical Notes, Test Results, Problem List, Procedures, History and Physical 
  • Coding Information (clinical information that is in (alpha) numeric format): ICD-9 Codes, Rev Codes, CPT Codes
  • Financial Information/Insurance (information related to insurance, billing, and payment): Billing Information, Payer Name, Payer ID, Account Balances, Plan Elements Covered, Payment Information, Payment Rates

Infection Control: This position will include initial and ongoing training in dealing with infection control. Training could include, but is not limited to, blood-borne pathogens, bodily fluids, and biohazardous materials as it applies to your daily work environment.
