Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Security Supervisor, the Security Officer I performs security duties including scheduled interior/exterior patrols of the buildings and grounds to ensure safety, security and general well-being of patients, Associates, and guests; patrols all areas to reduce opportunities for property loss, to detect fire and safety hazards; assists in the enforcement of smoking, parking, access control and identification policies including new policies which may be initiated by administration or department supervisor; meets the fire department at the main entrance and escorts them to the location of fire; secures entrances limiting access to the medical center during an emergency/disaster; assists Associates and guests to their cars if requested; provides assistance in cases of disruptive patients, visitors, or suspicious persons; assists any person needing assistance within the scope of recognized responsibilities; completes shift reports at the end of each shift; assists security supervisor in creating, organizing and conducting training; provides positive, constructive mentoring to security team.
Responsibilities:
  • Completes internal/external rounds of the facility (check for security issues, equipment deficiency operations/hazards)
  • Report and log if service/repairs are needed
  • Patrols all areas to reduce opportunities for property loss, to detect fire and safety hazards
  • Investigates theft or other incidents according to department policies.
  • Assists enforcement of smoking, parking, access control and identification policies.
  • Checks in/out prisoner patients
  • Responds to disruptive patients/visitors
  • Logs and documents daily issues
  • Inspects equipment (checks radio and flashlight battery charge, communication channel, pepper spray, expandable baton (ASP) and handcuffs) 
  • Routinely drives hospital vehicles
  • Ensures safe driving techniques of the vehicles under adverse weather conditions; loading and unloading the vehicles, maneuvers around obstacles; ability to maneuver vehicles through heavy traffic
  • Completes daily maintenance of the vehicles by checking and filling gas, oil, transmission, windshield wiper and brake fluid levels, air pressure of tires; completes minor maintenance problems (ex: jump starts vehicle) or notifies management; logs vehicle in and out when in use; plugs in vehicle block warmers when necessary; and cleans snow and ice from vehicles.
  • Responds and assists to codes (red, orange, silver, etc.); meets the fire/police department at the appropriate entrance and assisting as necessary; secures entrances and limiting access to the medical center during an emergency/disaster; responds and assists during a hazardous situation/disaster; and logs and documents emergency/disaster response. 
  • Performs additional duties in areas when needed: assists associates and guests to their cars when requested or if needing help; assists in covering for assisted parking department; and treats snow/ice packed sidewalks and parking lots with ice melt, retrieves and delivers bank bags.
Qualifications: 
Required:
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) required or completed within 90 days.
  • BLS certification required or must complete BLS certification within one month of employment.
  • A valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record and must be insurable through the medical center's insurance carrier.
  • Additional certification may be required for certain settings or populations. Specific information and the timeframe in which such certification must be attained will be provided by the department director/manager/supervisor at time of hire/transfer into department
Education/Experience:
  • High school graduate or equivalence
  • Education, training or experience in security
  • International Association for Healthcare Safety & Security (IAHSS)
Infection Control: Initial and Ongoing training in dealing with infection control. Trainings could include but are not limited to, blood borne pathogens, bodily fluids and bio hazardous materials as it applies to your daily work environment.
Patient Interaction: Periodic 
HIPAA: This position will have access to the following Protected Health Information in order to carry out the duties related to their position at Hays Medical Center based on the following criteria:
Primary – required (routine) to do the job;
Secondary – required for the job, but mostly be exception; and
None – no approved access
