GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION
A University Police Sergeant is responsible for supervising the daily operations of University Police Officers and Security Officers. Works under the direction of the University Police Chief and Lieutenant, completing assigned tasks in a timely manner. Schedules staff and makes assignments. Reviews work and evaluates performance, providing feedback, critique, counseling, and discipline, as needed. Must provide adequate training, conduct and oversee all aspects of police work, and analyze and evaluate reports. Performs duties in accordance with department policies as well as local, state, and federal laws. Works with diverse groups of people and makes an effort to involve community members in positive ways that promote the department's goals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Supervise law enforcement staff, including Police Officers and Security Officers. Ensure staff enforces laws, regulations, and local ordinances consistently. Implement enforcement procedures for traffic and parking violations as well.
  • Organize, direct, assign, and review the performance of University Police Officers on patrol shifts.
  • Maintain properly manned shifts in accordance with the approved schedule. Supervise Officers, assign tasks for all shifts, and review work while in progress.
  • Review officer paperwork and compile all required criminal reports for submission to state and federal agencies. Ensure that all reports are filed accurately and on-time.
  • Facilitate the training of officers. Monitor annual training requirements mandated by KSCPOST.
  • Communicate with the Lieutenant and Police Chief on a regular basis for approval, direction, and information exchange. Assist the Lieutenant in determining the amount of time and resources to be expended by staff for various situations.
  • Execute and oversee operations for crowd control, surveillance, and security at special events held on campus.
  • Advise staff regarding ongoing investigations and adherence to both investigative and legal requirements established in case law, administrative directives, and department mandates. Communicate changes in the law or regulations that affect police work.
  • Perform public relations functions; collect and prepare crime information and statistics for public release.
  • Maintain safe care and control of authorized equipment and vehicles. Perform spot inspections, preventative maintenance, and repairs.
  • Perform crime prevention analyses; survey buildings and facilities for areas of strength and vulnerability. Work with area crime prevention organizations to improve prevention programs and secure community life and property.
  • Maintain data required for the accreditation process.
  • Maintain and update all formal policies and procedures for the Department, including officer handbooks and official guidelines.
  • Serve as the Department's Local Agency Security Officer, monitoring adherence to policies and regulations set forth by KCJIS and perform monthly NCIC validations.
  • May work special assignments or cover shift duties as an Officer when needed.
  • Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
This position requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and at least three years of law enforcement experience. Relevant college coursework, preferred. Must obtain certification by the Kansas Law Commission on Peace Officer's Standards and Training. Must maintain all other required certifications, including firearms, first aid, and CPR. Valid driver's license, required

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES

Must be able to sit for extended periods of time to perform administrative and reporting tasks. Must be able to speak and hear clearly. Must frequently be able to stand and walk in order to complete patrolling assignments and supply security for events. Must be able to drive independently and safely. Must be able to reach and grasp objects. Requires the use of repetitive hand, wrist, and/or finger movement in order to type and perform other computer-based tasks. Must have clarity of vision and precise hand-eye coordination in order to observe behaviors, read license plates, conduct investigations, drive, etc

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
This position involves exposure to varying inclement weather conditions while on patrol. This position involves some exposure to loud noises

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Must work effectively with a diverse population.
Must maintain composure and perform duties effectively under stressful circumstances.

Must complete 40 hours per year of continuing education by attending trainings, webinars, and other law enforcement seminars.
Must qualify with issued firearm annually.
