The Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science (KAMS) at Fort Hays State University is seeking a 12-month position as a Mental Health Counselor/Success Coach for the Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science (KAMS) and the Academy of Mathematics and Science (AMS). This position will assist students in achieving academic and personal goals to aid them in acquiring the skills and qualifications needed for future academic, personal and career pursuits. This position includes providing personal and group counseling and care coordination for KAMS|AMS students as well as sharing the responsibility of an on-call phone. This position will include developing activities that promote positive mental health and relationships. Collaborating with KAMS|AMS staff to develop programming based on best practice is a vital part of this position. A successful candidate should have the ability to develop strong working relationships with diverse communities and interact effectively within the KAMS|AMS and campus community. This is an on-campus position, located on the Fort Hays State University campus in Hays, Kansas.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree completed or in progress in counseling, psychology, social work, or related field. If the degree is in progress, it must be completed within nine months of the hire date.
- Provide therapeutic services to students, either independently or under the supervision of a licensed mental health professional in conjunction with the Director of KAMS-AMS.
- At least one year of experience in mental health delivery services and/or college counseling.
- Experience working with adolescent population.
- Experience providing presentations and working within a team.
- License or license-eligible within professional field. If the applicant’s degree is in progress, they must apply for a temporary license upon degree completion.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in higher education environment.
- Clinically licensed or working toward clinical licensure in the State of Kansas.
- Prior experience working with gifted adolescents and teens.
- Experience with crisis management.
- Excellent writing, organizational, and computer skills as evidenced by application documents.

Responsibilities:
- Provide counseling services for high school students eligible for the Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science (KAMS) and the Academy of Mathematics and Science (AMS).
- Provide overall care assessment, crisis intervention services, and community referrals.
- Maintain records and documentation of clinical services, in compliance with law, ethics and best practices.
- Develop and implement a curriculum that addresses the following but is not limited to: Time management, Relationship building, Decision Making, Goal Setting, Growth Mindset, Resourceful, Critical thinking, Self Awareness, Leadership, Healthy Habits.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings and training activities.
- Pursue professional development related to the responsibilities of the position and profession.
- Attend key events such as August Orientation, Preview Day, JR Research Seminar (2.0), SR Issues in Leadership|Colloquia, JR Issues in Leadership|Colloquia, Appeals Meeting, Completion Ceremony, Summer Summit, Honors Academy Workshops
- Assist with student research trips, competitions, or day outings.
- Share on-call phone duties with Director and Assistant Director.
- Other duties as assigned by the Director.
