The Department of Applied Technology is seeking a 9-month, tenure-track, faculty member who will contribute to our growing Industrial Technology program, including Construction Management Engineering Design Technology, Manufacturing Technology, and Technology Education. The position’s workload distribution is 70% instruction, 20% service, and 10% research. The candidate must demonstrate a commitment to undergraduate education, display strong communication skills, and be able to work well with students, faculty, and staff.
 
Instruction (70%):
The successful candidate will teach a variety of industrial technology courses. The teaching load is 12 credit hours for both fall and spring semesters with a possible summer course overload. Teaching opportunities include theoretical and applied coursework taught on-campus and online. Faculty members are also expected to act as mentors to undergraduate students.

Service (20%): The successful candidate will be expected to serve on department and university committees and participate in other appropriate department, college, university, community, and professional service activities as well as sponsoring department student groups.

Scholarship and Creative Activity (10%): The successful candidate will be expected to develop a program of scholarly pursuit in his or her discipline area, preferably focused on topics of regional instructional and applied technology interest.

Instructional Responsibilities:
The department has a strong technology and engineering education program, and an emphasis will be placed on blending science, technology, applied engineering, and mathematical concepts into applied industrial courses. The primary teaching responsibility will be to teach and develop manufacturing, STEM, and industrial management/leadership related courses. This position will have classroom and lab/shop teaching responsibilities. The successful candidate will be expected to teach the following courses on a variety of rotations:
               
  • Industrial Management
  • STEM Practices in Elementary Education
  • Training and Instructional Systems
  • Mechanical and Electrical Systems
  • Robotics
  • Fluid Systems: Hydraulics/Pneumatics
  • Plastic Processes
  • Technology in Society (General Education Course)

Ideal candidates will have teaching experience in high-tech industrial labs and/or management experience in industry and be able to bring those experiences and manufacturing knowledge to the Applied Technology classrooms.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree with at least 10 years of experience in education and/or industry or a doctoral degree.
  • HLC qualified in industrial technology content.

Preferred Qualifications:  
  • PhD, EdD, or Master’s Degree in Manufacturing Technology, Industrial Technology, Technology Education, Engineering Technology, or a related area. 
  • Evidence of effective teaching at the college or university level.
  • Familiarity with at least some of the following subjects and their associated lab equipment:  CAD, construction, graphics communication, metallurgy, plastics, robotics, and woodworking.
  • Knowledge of higher-education accreditation processes, especially the Association of Technology, Management, and Applied Engineering (ATMAE).
  • Demonstrated success as a supervisor of student organizations and/or undergraduate research projects.

Rank: Degree and experience will determine first appointment rank.

The Department of Applied Technology has eight full-time faculty positions, 200 undergraduate majors, and offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Technology Studies, Bachelor of Science degree Technology Leadership and an Associate of Applied Science in Technology and Leadership (Industrial Technology). About the College:
The Werth College of Science, Technology, and Mathematics (WCOSTM) was formed in 2015 by aggregating the departments of Agriculture, Applied Technology, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geosciences, Mathematics, and Physics, as well as the Sternberg Museum of Natural History and the Kansas Wetlands Education Center. The academic units consist of approximately 75 full-time faculty, 1200 undergraduate majors, and 50 graduate students.
