Fort Hays State University seeks to appoint one full-time professional advisor to begin work during the fall semester of 2024. This twelve-month position will proactively enhance the student experience by providing focused commitment to student success for International Partnership (IP) students who are living and learning in their home country via online or on-site instruction, for IP Pathway Partnership students who come to FHSU main campus for a portion of their degree program, and for non-degree-seeking, non-certificate-seeking students. The position will report to the Director of Academic Advising and Career Exploration (AACE), with a strong connection to Global Affairs/International Student Services (GA/ISS).

Job Duties: 
The individual appointed to fill this position will fulfill the following student advisement responsibilities:
  • In collaboration with GA/ISS, advise IP cross-border students on topics including partnership degree plans, enrollment status as required for immigration compliance, and strategies for success in their partnership programs at FHSU.
  • Advise non-degree-seeking students who are pursuing a variety of educational goals and objectives.
  • Advise students about academic policies, programs, resources, and requirements.
  • Participate in both AACE and GA/ISS team functions as appropriate.

The individual appointed will also fulfill the following responsibilities as an advisor:
  • Assist students in selecting major programs, enrolling in courses, meeting academic deadlines, and adjusting schedules to fulfill academic requirements.
  • Evaluate students’ academic situations and work with students in understanding the educational options available to them, in making informed decisions, and in setting and achieving academic goals including timely completion of their degree programs.
  • Assist new students in navigating course processes.
  • Assist students in connecting with appropriate university resources to support student success and well-being.
  • Work closely with faculty and staff, through the Early Tiger Alert system, to assist students in addressing and overcoming academic challenges.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues from across campus in units including, but not limited to, college dean’s offices, the Registrar’s Office, the Financial Assistance Office, the Office of Academic Affairs, the Office of Admissions, FHSU Online, and Career Services.
  • Maintain student files and records, complete Advisor Notes documenting advising activities and outcomes, and update student information systems when and as needed.
  • Participate actively in advising-related professional development activities both on and off campus.

The individual appointed to fill this position will also fulfill the following additional duties related to student recruitment, retention, and success:
  • Participate in student recruitment and student success events and initiatives.
  • Participate in university-level assessment activities related to student advisement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

  • Professional advisors must possess advising, communication, and situation-management skills and must be able to interact with students in a consistently professional manner and to assist them in moving successfully and efficiently through their academic programs.
  • Professional advisors should possess a strong work ethic, an ability to work successfully as members of a team, and a commitment to assisting students in resolving concerns related to their academic programs and progress.
  • Successful professional advisors are self-motivated and proactive and have well-developed abilities to organize and prioritize work, facility in learning and using a variety of software packages and applications, and a commitment to liberal arts education.

Minimum Qualification: Bachelor’s degree

Preferred Qualification: Master’s degree

Appointment Date: Start date to be determined after acceptance of an offer and completion of criminal background check.

Base Salary Information:
Bachelor’s degree - $36,000 per year (12-month contract)
Master’s degree or higher - $39,000 per year (12-month contract)
