Job Summary

The purpose of the Grant Accountant position is to support Federal grant projects by preparing and submitting grant fund reimbursement and progress forms, and administering other grant reporting activities as necessary. In addition, the Grant Accountant can function as an Accountant by entering journal entries into the General Ledger, processing wholesale and miscellaneous invoicing, conducting general ledger reconciliations for interim and annual audited financial statements, and preparing and submitting monthly taxes. The Grant Accountant maintains the overall integrity of the grant reporting, general ledger and financial statements through relevant recording and analysis. The Grant Accountant supplies data and supports other employees both in Finance and other departments within Midwest Energy.

Job Duties - Responsibilities – Tasks

Federal Grants

  1. Analyze, prepare, and submit grant reimbursement forms. Which includes gathering supporting documentation as needed.
  2. Perform analysis/reconciliation for grant construction work orders.
  3. Assist with preparation of grant applications. Assist in the preparation of audit schedules, documentation, and support for annual audits, specifically related to grants.
  4. Perform grant-related post-award functions, including budget and expense analysis, financial reporting and reconciliations.
  5. Develop and maintain a database of grant financial documentation for historical reference and compliance purposes, ensuring confidentiality and security of financial records.
  6. Support other grant administration, as necessary.
  7. Build and maintain strong relationship with federal and state grant representatives.
General Ledger

  1. Analyze, prepare, and submit work papers for journal entries.
  2. Prepare and enter recurring journal entries.
  3. Reconcile general ledger accounts and resolve financial discrepancies.
  4. Work with external auditors to provide information for annual financial audit.
  5. Balance and distribute monthly reports.
Month-End /Reporting

  1. Assist in preparation of the monthly Board Report
  2. Assist in balancing fixed assets, material and supplies inventory, and revenues.
  3. Prepare other reports/schedules as directed.
Accounting Activities

  1. Gather and prepare data for various monthly and annual state, federal and industry reports.
  2. Assist in providing data for electric and gas rate cases.
  3. Ensure compliance with applicable standards and systems of internal control.
  4. Answers accounting procedure questions by researching and interpreting policies and regulations.
  5. Identify areas for improvement and assist with implementing improvements to processes.
General

  1. Assist Plant Accountant with closing work orders, running reports and month end processing as needed.
  2. Promote safe working habits and enforce all safety rules and regulations of Midwest Energy, Inc. Lead by example in safety compliance and take corrective action on safety violations, defective equipment, and any other practice that may adversely affect a safe working environment.
  3. Keep informed regarding new developments, trends, and best practices in relevant field. Recommend changes, initiatives, etc. to management for effective processes and procedures within the company.
  4. Keep apprised of changes and developments in pertinent local, State and Federal laws, ordinances and rules, and take appropriate action to stay in compliance with said rules, regulations, etc.
  5. Develop and maintain internal and external working relationships for maximum effectiveness in serving Midwest Energy customers and communities. Ensure communication and exchange of information so as to present a positive corporate image, both internally and externally. Keep management informed of issues that might impact the work environment.
  6. Performs other duties as directed.
  7. Work on special projects as directed.

Education and Experience

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Accounting is preferred.
  2. Bachelor’s degree, with completion of at least twelve (12) hours college credit in accounting, is required.
  3. One (1) to two (2) years professional-level experience in an office environment.
  4. Ability to learn FERC Uniform System of Accounts.

  6. Coordinate and provide direction in conjunction with key entities for effective outcomes. Primary key entities include auditors, consultants, contractors, vendors, other regulatory agencies, and other utilities.
  7. Keep informed of changes concerning GAAP, rules, regulations, and/or processes and take appropriate action to stay in compliance.
  8. Ability to build trust and maintain uncompromising integrity.
