Job Title: Heavy Equipment Operator

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Reports To: Sr Project Manager Construction

Job Purpose: The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible to for operating heavy equipment in a safe, appropriate and effective manner. Assures equipment has daily maintenance duties performed and communicates any problems or issues with the equipment immediately upon discovery.

Essential Functions include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  1. Checks all equipment fluid levels and takes tanks off of pads and sets them on the ground.
  2. Operates all heavy equipment to perform excavating functions such as dozer, backhoe, skid steer and grader.
  3. Ensures Health and Safety is the number one goal by following policies, processes, and acting in a safe manner at all times.
  4. Performs one of the following, backhoe, heavy duty crane, heavy duty forklift, and/or trackhoe.
  5. Operates a forklift as necessary.
  6. Completes daily checklist as required for proper operation of the unit being operated.
  7. Assures unit is never operated in an unsafe manner or in a manner which is inconsistent with Standard Operating Procedures.
  8. Completes and submits all associated paperwork as required for waste tracking movements.
  9. Assures that all containers are properly secured, i.e. chock blocks, jack stands, etc.
  10. Ensures that work meets all applicable Health and Safety Standard Operating Procedures.
  11. Ensures that work meets compliance standards within facility operation.
  12. Inspects and cleans and washes equipment. 
  13. Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules and regulations. Secures materials and equipment at end of day.
  14. Performs additional duties as needed. 
  15. Regular attendance and timeliness.

  1. High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  2. Minimum 2-5 years of equipment operating experience.
  3. Ability to work in team environment.
  4. Demonstrates complete proficiency in operation of one of the following units: Backhoe; heavy duty crane; heavy duty forklift; or track hoe.
  5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  6. Ability to read and interpret documents such as job instructions with basic problem solving skills. 
  7. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  8. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. 
  9. Ability to manage time effectively and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.
  10. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  11. Ability to use hand tools, such as wrenches and screw-drivers
  12. Ability to use department equipment.
  13. Ability to maintain confidentiality.

  1. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, bend, kneel, climb stairs and walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds for men or 30 pounds for women. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  2. The work environment is indoor/outdoor setting with frequent exposure to outside elements. The noise level in the work environment is frequently high. Must abide by PPE requirements.
  3. Able to enter/exit heavy equipment without strain – sometimes climbing a ladder.
  4. Able to operate physical controls/pedals associated with the piece of equipment – manual dexterity.
  5. 20/20 eyesight corrected or uncorrected - depth perception is critical.
  6. Needs good balance. 
  7. Ability to use tools and to assist in PM of Equipment.
  8. Ability to lift hoods to assist with equipment repairs.
  9. Ability to sit for extended periods of time. 
  10. Must abide by PPE requirements.
